Farmers must be appreciated and supported-2020 National Best Farmer

Mr Solomon Kojo Kusi, the 2020 National Best Farmer, has called on the government and players in the agricultural sector to support and appreciate the activities of farmers and fishers.

He said the farmers and fishers played an immense role in the economy through the provision of food and their efforts should be appreciated.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA ahead of the 2021 National Farmers’ Day celebration to be held in Cape Coast, Mr Kusi said regardless of the sacrifice they made, farmers still go through some frustrating challenges.

He cited the difficulty in accessing financial support from financial institutions to support their activities as the major challenge farmers’ faced in the country.

“Accessing financial support in this country is very difficult as the banks are not ready to offer support to farmers. The duration for the payment of loans is inadequate, which is another setback to our work. Little has been done to support farmers and fishers in the country in this direction,” he stated.

He said farmers sometimes struggled to get guarantors for loans and grants to support their work and the interest rate on the loans was too much to enable them to make a profit.

Mr Kusi, however, applauded the government for the introduction of programmes such as the Planting for Food and Jobs, which has added value to farming activities.

He called on the youth to develop an interest in agriculture and take advantage of the opportunities it offered, saying it could help reduce the rising graduate unemployment in the country.
