Fasting As a Tool of Prosperity

Fasting and Prayer

Fasting will break poverty from your life.

Fasting is a discipline that is regularly practiced by the adherents of various religions. It is strategic and purposeful.

Fasting and praying almost always go together. It is an expression of faith and confidence in the Great Spirit.

During fasting one may abstain from food or water or both. Some people may also fast from social media.

When we fast we want to focus our thoughts exclusively on God and His word. We want to know more about our Creator. We want to know how he wants us to live and please him. He is the source of abundance and everything good.

To access his blessings, we must follow his values and ethics. He wants his children to prosper and to live in peace and harmony.

Friend if you want something valuable from another person, you need to humble yourself before that person, state clearly what you want and the motives for it and how you ask will determine whether you will receive a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to your request.

When it comes to the Creator, there are acceptable ways to approach him with our requests. For the avoidance of doubt, Philippians 4: 8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are  true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just,, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” To put this another way, your request should be for the highest good. Your prosperity should benefit the people around you.

The scripture above also tells us a polluted mind and a polluted heart will hinder your prayer. You need spiritual cleansing to make yourself presentable to God. Fasting and praying will draw you closer to God. This is because fasting will help kill your fleshly desires and position you to hear God’s voice.

Fasting and praying will give you spiritual strength to overcome the adversities of life. There are stubborn problems that won’t go away, unless you combine fasting with prayer. Mahatma Gandhi expressed a similar sentiment when he said, “My religion teaches me that whenever there is distress which one cannot remove, one must fast and pray.” “Jesus himself has shown us by his own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil (Pope John Paul ii).

Some people fast but they do it wrong. Our fasting should delight God, not for our pleasure. True fasting must reflect the values and ethics of God as observed earlier.

Our fasting will be acceptable if it involves removing oppression and injustice from our midst. In Isaiah 58:6-12 the word of God says, “The kind of fasting I want is this: remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.

Then my favour will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wounds will be quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; my presence will protect you on every side. When you pray I will answer you. When you call to me, I will respond.

If you put an end to oppression, to every gesture of contempt, and to every evil word; if you give food to the hungry and satisfy those who are in need, then the darkness around you will turn to the brightness of noon. And I will always guide you and satisfy you with good things. I will keep you strong and well. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring of water that never runs dry. Your people will rebuild what has long been in ruins, building again on the old foundations. You will be known as the people who rebuilt the walls, who restored the ruined houses.”

The prophet Isaiah has told us what true fasting entails. Those who are in positions of authority should not oppress those they work with. Do not cheat your employees. Do not make your househelp or garden boy work like slaves. They deserve to be treated with dignity.

Political authorities should release people who are not supposed to be in prison. T When they are neck-deep in corrupt practices, fasting should help them put an end to it. Corruption deprives the state of funds that should go into development projects that can benefit the masses.

Fasting should not be done to gain recognition or fame. It is between you and your God who rewards.

Your fast will be more meaningful when you give alms to the poor, clothe the naked and give shelter to the homeless. You must have respect for all life forms and avoid any form of abuses.

According to the prophet Isaiah, true fasting as described above will make you prosper in life. And you will be wealthy, healthy and happy.
