Tension has gripped Kenya’s Mandera county on Monday as Somali government forces exchange gunfire in search of a regional security minister believed to be holed up in the border town.

Kenyan officials and witnesses said the fierce confrontation between the Somali government and regional Jubabland forces loyal to wanted security minister Abdirashid Janan erupted on Monday morning, raising fears it could spill over to Mandera county.

Sources said civil servants and traders along the border town are holed up in premises waiting for calm to return before they can go about their business.

Somalia had previously requested Kenyan to hand over Janan who is wanted by Mogadishu for “serious crimes.” Enditem
