The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, approved contracts for the completion of Gurara and Ilesha dam projects for N40 billion.

According to the Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Okchepe, both projects will be completed between 12 and 18 months.

She said while the Gurara project will cost N37 billion, the Ilesha dam is awarded in the sum of N3.6 billion.

Information Minister, Labaran Maku, said that the Guarara dam project was conceived to supply water to the Federal Capital Territory through the Lower Usman Dam and the awarding of the contract was in line with the resolve of the present administration to complete all on-going projects,

He also said that the project, on completion, will provide irrigation for farmers as well as generate 30 mega watts of electricity.

Maku stated further that the completion of the two phases of Guarara dam – Lot A and B will provide irrigation land for about 20,000 farmers and generate and about 8,000 jobs. Already, he said a scheme is in place to engage 500 Young Graduate Farmers on completion.
