Fintiri?s 22 billion expenditure as acting governor for 86 days causes tension
Adamawa state is enmeshed in tension following allegations that the speaker of the state house of assembly, UmaruFintiri spent over N 22 billion during his stay as acting governor of the state.
The allegation is coming as the 86-day tenure of former Acting Governor and Speaker Adamawa State House of Assembly Fintiri came under scrutiny at the weekend as a group of concerned citizens under the aegis of Adamawa Progressive Movement described it as sleaze infested.
The convener of the group, Joshua Sunday Wugira, noted that from explanation offered by Fintiri on how he ran his 86-day government during a world Press Conference he addressed in Yola, it was glaring that the state was robbed of colossal amount of funds.
He noted that during the said Press Conference, Fintiri had claimed to have cited projects in Kirchinga, Garta and Kamale when the areas were under Boko Haram insurgents, challenging Fintiri to show the world the projects he executed in the areas having been liberated now.
Wugira noted that in the same manner, Fintiri?s administration could not account for the billions of naira it claimed to have invested in the construction of the Faculty of Law and Health in the state-owned University adding that since the project was commissioned, no single block was mobilized to site.
?Before Fintiri?s administration awarded the said contracts, students of the institution used to play football on the piece of land on which the Faculty of law was to be constructed.
?As at now, the place is still being used by students as a playground, then where are the so called billions of tax payers funds alleged to have been expended?? He queried.
While noting that he was not holding brief for the incumbent administration, Wugira said as concerned citizens they were compelled to start talking about the maladministration in the state as politicians have made the state their Guinea Pigs adding that very soon they will unravel the atrocities being committed by the incumbent regime.
?Our quest to beam our search light on the administration of Fintiri follows the serious questions of financial sleaze which his 86-day administration left unanswered. In the same vein, we shall also beam our search light on the activities of the current administration and will make our findings known very soon,? he noted.
Wugira while debunking the huge debt profile left by Fintiri noted that it was surprising for a government that serves for only 86 days to incur a debt of over N5 billion.
?Recently, Fintiri was accused of incurring a debt of over N5 billion by the incumbent administration when he served as Ag Governor and up till now he has not done anything substantial to exculpate himself from such blame.
?Let Fintiri tell the world what he has done with such a colossal amount of fund in just 86 days if he wants us to take him serious,? Wugira pointed out.
He urged the people of Adamawa state not to be swayed by the fact that Fintiri has given a number of contracts as he noted that most of them fell short of due process and were inordinately over inflated.
On the issue of payment of backlog of two months salary, Wugira said the former acting governor should not be given undue accolades over that as salary is the right of the workers adding that ?A government cannot receive credit for paying its workers their salary. It can only get credit if it was able to improve workers condition or even employ more work-force to reduce unemployment, the same cannot be said of Fintiri?s government,? he noted.
