A destructive fire tore through Kwadaso Main Market in the Ashanti Region early Thursday, consuming approximately 40 wooden and metal shops and leaving traders reeling from significant losses.
The blaze, which ignited around midnight, was finally contained by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) by 6 am after a strenuous effort to prevent further spread.
Among the ruins were diverse goods, including foodstuffs, cooking oil, confectioneries, wax prints, and electrical appliances, which distressed affected vendors who hurried to assess the extent of the damage.
“I sell electrical appliances here.
I got a call early this morning and rushed over, only to find everything destroyed.
It’s a desperate situation unless we get immediate help,” lamented one trader.
Acting queen of the market, Akosua Agyekumwaa, expressed the collective anguish: “This is a devastating loss. We urgently appeal to the president and our Member of Parliament for assistance as our livelihoods are severely impacted.”
S.O2 Opoku Michael, a fire officer from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), confirmed ongoing investigations to pinpoint the fire’s cause, underscoring the need for clarity amidst the market’s ruinous aftermath.
