A fierce blaze has destroyed a two-storey hostel at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana, leaving students shocked and displaced.

The fire, which broke out on Thursday night, ravaged the entire second floor of the nine-bedroom accommodation, leaving students with no chance to salvage their belongings. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

DO3 Peter Addai, Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Fire Service, informed Citi News that the fire service has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze. “The cause of the fire is still under investigation. We are looking into all possible factors,” Addai said.

The fire spared eleven rooms, which remain intact and habitable, providing some relief amidst the crisis.

In response to the disaster, the Students Representative Council (SRC) at KNUST has arranged temporary housing for the affected students at the SRC hostel. The council has also called on all students to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
