Fire Outbreak

Victims of the fire outbreak at Railways Quarters, behind the Graphic Communications Group Ltd and Accra Breweries Ltd, have appealed for support from government and philanthropists to restore their means of livelihood.

The fire, which started around 0130 hours on Sunday, destroyed structures and personal belongings of the squatters.

Divisional Officer II, Mr Ellis Okoe Robinson, the Head of Public Relations of the Ghana National Fire Service, told the Ghana News Agency that the Service had a distress call at 0200 hours on the fire outbreak and arrived at the scene around 0206 hours to douse it.

“We were able to bring the fire under control and completely extinguished it at 0450 hours,” he said.

“For now, it is unclear what caused the fire but we can assure that investigations are underway to ascertain the true cause,” he said.

Meanwhile, some squatters who lost their belongings in the fire said they had no choice but to sleep on the streets.

Madam Afia Owusu, a victim, said she lost all her belongings in the inferno and appealed for support.

Kofi Atta, also a victim, said: “The fire was very scary, I was just able to salvage some few things. It is a sad situation and I don’t not know where to go from here.”
