International research and data firm Fitch Solutions has projected a potential victory for John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana’s upcoming December 2024 presidential elections.

The London-based firm, known for its consistent forecasts, cites voter sentiment and economic conditions as pivotal factors favouring the NDC.

According to Fitch Solutions’ mid-year review for Sub-Saharan Africa, 54% of respondents in recent surveys indicated a preference for the former president, bolstering the NDC’s prospects. Mike Kruiniger, Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, emphasized the influence of economic issues like job creation and management on voter decisions.

“We believe that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP),” stated Kruiniger. He highlighted ongoing economic challenges as potentially undermining the NPP’s electoral position.

Kruiniger elaborated, “Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead, with the most recent survey showing 54% of respondents favouring the NDC.” He underscored that voter priorities align closely with economic stability and employment, where the NPP faces perceived vulnerabilities.

“In addition, multiple surveys have shown that economic management and job creation are going to be the most important issues during the election for voters, which we believe will put the ruling NPP at a disadvantage given the economic challenges that the country has faced over the last couple of years,” Kruiniger added.

Fitch Solutions’ assessment indicates a challenging electoral landscape for the ruling party amidst ongoing economic hardships, potentially tilting the political scale favouring the NDC as Ghana approaches its crucial 2024 elections.
