It said the gang is alleged to have defrauded some local banks and their customers in the main cities of Yaounde and economic capital Douala of hundreds of millions of CFA francs (one dollar equals about 600 CFA francs) with the use of fake automatic bank cards.

“They are all computer experts in cybercriminality who have been operating in some major towns in Cameroon, especially Yaounde and Douala, since 2008. Police sources say the fraudsters have defrauded some local banks and their customers of hundreds of millions CFA francs with the use of fake automatic bank cards,” the radio said.

“They smuggle themselves into the automatic teller machine board and place a micro-video camera that looks like a pen on the top of the machine. The camera then video tapes all the banking transactions carried out by the customer including their facade bank code with which they fabricate fake automatic bank card,” it added.

Owners of bank accounts using automatic teller machine boards have been asked to be vigilant each time they carry out their banking operations using the automatic teller machine. Enditem
