Five suspected militants were killed during a gunbattle with security forces in India-administered Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.
A joint team of the police and army surrounded the rebels in the Keller forest area of Shopian district.
“Five militants were killed in the 10-hour encounter. Their bodies have been recovered from the scene,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
The Muslim-majority region has seen a violent secessionist movement since the late 1980s in which nearly 44,000 people have lost their lives, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal.
