Four individuals, including three Ghanaians and a Chinese national, have been arrested for their roles in tampering with and illegally installing meters from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The group’s activities have led to a financial loss of over GH₵77,000 for ECG, covering the period from July to August.

The arrests, a result of a swift investigation triggered by a tip from Asaase Radio, demonstrate ECG’s commitment to addressing such issues promptly.

Wisdom Sewlorm, an ECG agent, was found to have abused his position by transferring meters to his employee, Ernest Afatsawu, who then sold them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm for GH₵1,200. This illegal activity not only resulted in financial losses for ECG but also damaged the reputation of the company and endangered public safety.

The firm’s manager, Rulian Shan, and sales manager, Ali Yakubu, were also apprehended on Friday, August 2.

The ECG’s Director of Investigation, Prosecution, and Security, Paul Abariga, announced that the four individuals would be presented in court on Wednesday, ensuring that justice is served.

Additionally, the contract with the involved ECG contractor will be terminated.

Abariga revealed that tampered meters were being installed in various locations, including a factory where a residential meter was used to manufacture plastic bowls.

The ongoing investigations, part of ECG’s commitment to accountability, aim to ensure such incidents are not repeated, providing a sense of security to the public.
