Four civilians killed by Rwandese rebels in eastern DR Congo

Four people were killed on Monday morning in North Kivu province, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), by fighters of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels, a civil society source has said.

A statement from the Center for Promotion of Peace, Democracy and Human Rights (CEPADHO) said the attack occurred in Lubero territory when FDLR fighters were looking for foodstuffs.

“The FDLR rebels shot at the victims who were going to their farms,” the statement said.

According to the same source, several localities where thousands of internally displaced persons are residing, were burnt last week by the FDLR rebels.

“For these rebels, the attacks were a response to the defeat they suffered under the hands of Mayi-Mayi, a local militia group operating in the same territory,” CEPADHO continued.

Absence of the army in certain localities in North Kivu province has sometimes encouraged armed groups to carry out attacks against civilians. Enditem
