Another movie is getting a TV adaptation. After greenlighting ?Minority Report? series for the upcoming fall season, FOX is now developing a series adaptation of 1980?s movie ?Urban Cowboy? which starred John Travolta and Debra Winger.
Craig Brewer is tapped to write and direct the pilot, Variety reports. He is also set to executive produce the series for Paramount TV and 20th Century Fox TV. Should the network move forward with the project, Chris Levinson will serve as showrunner and executive producer.
Robert Evans, who produced the original film, is also on board as executive producer along with HBO alum Sue Naegle, while James Sikura will co-executive produce the series.
The movie centers on the love-hate relationship between Buford Uan ?Bud? Davis (Travolta) and Sissy (Winger) with the gritty backdrop of rodeos, oil refineries, line dancing clubs and other aspects of modern-day Texas. Words are, the TV adaptation is eyed as possible companion piece for FOX?s hit series ?Empire?, although the project is still in the early script stage.
