Hollande will speak with three journalists briefly before having a roundtable discussion with members of French society, including the mother of a jihadist who left for Syria and a business leader, AFP news agency reported.

While he is not expected to make a significant announcement, the president is reported to hope the programme will give him a chance to discuss the achievements of the four years that he has held office.

Hollande’s first five-year term will come to an end with presidential elections to be held in 2017 that are confronting established parties with significant challenges. Hollande’s own popularity has reached record lows, after a surge in public approval he enjoyed after the November terrorist attacks on Paris largely dissipated.

His Socialist Party, as well as the conservative Les Republicaines, are threatened by the rising popularity of the populist National Front.

Hollande’s economy minister, Emmanuel Macron, recently announced that he would launch his own centrist political movement, sparking speculation about his ambitions for 2017.
