Thompson died on Sunday from a recurrence of lymphoma, his family said in a statement. The Republican politician was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma over a decade ago.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sense of grief that we share the passing of our brother, husband, father and grandfather who died peacefully in Nashville surrounded by his family,” the statement read.

“Our nation has lost a servant, Tennessee has lost a son, and our family has lost its rock,” it added.

Thompson, who also ran for the presidency in 2008, jumped back and forth between acting and politics. His eight-year tenure in the Senate ended in 2003.

He acted in the films “The Hunt for Red October,” “Die Hard 2” and “In the Line of Fire,” among others. He also appeared on the small screen the gruff, no-nonsense district attorney of Manhattan, on NBC’s “Law & Order” from 2002 to 2007.

Thompson was also a father of five children, three of them from his first marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Lindsey and two from Jeri Kehn Thompson. He also had several grandchildren.
