Hollande, accompanied by senior officials and celebrities known for their environmental advocacies, became the first French leader to visit the Philippines since it became an independent state in 1946.

Hollande was scheduled to visit the remote town of Guiuan in the eastern province of Samar, which was among the worst-hit areas when Typhoon Haiyan struck in 2013.

The French leader was to formally open a climate change forum in Manila and was scheduled to meet with the country’s top business leaders.
