Natale Trimboli, 46, was found in a flat in Molochio, a town in the remote mountain areas of Calabria, the region forming the tip of Italy’s boot from where the ‘Ndrangheta originates. He is accused of several murders and convicted in absentia for drug trafficking.
The mobster, who had been on the run since 2010, was apprehended by Carabinieri police along with three accomplices.
Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said the arrest represented “another heavy blow to organized crime.”
Trimboli belonged to a ‘Ndrangheta clan operating in the north-western city of Turin, as well as in Calabria.
The ‘Ndrangheta is one of world’s most powerful crime groups. It has made substantial inroads in northern Europe, Latin America and the United States, and is considered a global leader in drug trafficking.
