The Ghana Armed Forces have warned the youth of Tema, cautioning them against further attacks on military installations or personnel.

The statement, released by the Public Relations Unit and signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey Quashie, emphasized that any such actions would be met with an appropriate response.

The release detailed an incident on April 12, 2024, where a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy was attacked by a crowd participating in a festival at Tema Newtown. This resulted in damage to the vehicle and severe injuries to three Naval personnel, who were subsequently treated at the Tema Naval Base medical center.

Following the confrontation, three individuals were arrested and handed to the Tema Newtown District Police for further investigation. Subsequently, a mob, suspected to be associated with the festival participants, attacked the Tema Naval Base in an attempt to free the detainees. Warning shots were fired to protect the base’s sensitive installations, resulting in two civilian fatalities whose cause of death is yet to be determined.

The statement continued that on April 13, 2024, the mob attacked the Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema Newtown, causing property damage. The Ghana Armed Forces assured collaboration with the Ghana Police Service in investigating the incidents, with findings to be disclosed promptly.

In conclusion, the Ghana Armed Forces urged all parties to maintain calm during the investigation and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

This caution follows a clash between the youth of Tema Newtown and the Naval personnel at Tema Eastern Naval Command resulting in the sudden death of two civilians on Saturday.
