Galamsey Operator Jailed For Robbery


Fatawo Fuseini, a 21 year-old illegal miner, has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in hard labour for armed robbery.

jailA Tarkwa circuit court presided over by Mr Justice Alex Obeng Asante convicted Fuseini for conspiring with five others and robbed passengers of their monies and mobile phones at Sureso near Asankrangwa in the Western Region.

The convict, who was charged with conspiracy and robbery pleaded guilty to the offence but his accomplices Kwesi Acheampong, farmer, 35, Kwadwo Owusu, unemployed, 18, Kwadwo Dubin, carpenter, 25, Ibrahim Jackson, farmer, 37 and Yaw Frimpong a 27 year-old farmer pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

They have been remanded into prison custody to re-appear before the court on August 17.

The prosecutor, Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah, narrating the facts in court said on July 1, at about 430 am Fuseini, Acheampong, Owusu, Dubin, Jackson and Frimpong armed themselves with guns and blocked the road at a spot near Sureso on the Asankrangwa-Bawdie road.

He said they robbed several vehicles carrying passengers to the tune of GH? 23,460.00 and eight mobile phones.

Detective Amponsah said Fuseini and the five accused persons in the process of the robbery shot and killed a 53 year-old driver, Anthony Oppong who was then in charge of a Sprinter bus with registration number AW 1999-14 from Samreboi to Kumasi with seven passengers on board.

After the act, the Prosecutor said the robbers bolted in a nearby bush.

According to Detective Amponsah, around 11:00 am on that same day upon a tip-off Acheampong, Owusu and Dubin were arrested at Asankrangwa and when they were searched one dismantled locally manufactured single barrel gun and two cutlasses were found in their luggage.

He said Fuseini and the other accused persons who were found in the bush started firing at the search party.

One of the search party members who is a hunter and was closer to the robbers returned fire and hit the convict at the left thigh and he was arrested.

The Prosecutor said Jackson and Frimpong managed to escape but they were later arrested at Sureso.

Detective Amponsah said on July 3 all the accused persons with other people were paraded for identification where Fuseini identified Acheampong, Owusu, Dubin and Jackson as his accomplices.

The convict explained that it was Jackson who recruited the robbers and sent them to the robbery spot in a cab and left after helping them to block the road with logs.

The Prosecutor said the body of the deceased driver has been deposited at the Enchi Government hospital mortuary for autopsy.
