Executive Director of Gambia National Youth Council Lamin Darboe told Xinhua on Monday unemployment is a key factor forcing young people into irregular migration.
“Of course we want to see the possibility of inspiring more young people to take up self-employment and this Youth Chamber of Commerce exhibition is a place to ensure that such interventions are supported,” he said after presiding over the opening of Gambia Youth Chamber of Commerce’s (CYCC) first exhibition.
According tho him, the GYCC has mobilized young people across the country to exhibit their products and services. He urged the stakeholders including donors to visit and see the commitment of youths while calling on the community to come and buy their products to support their business.
He expressed optimism that this would inspire the young to believe that they can make it at home without embarking on irregular migration.
“Another reason for this exhibition is to celebrate young people as key men in building the country’s economy. This will make them feel recognized for their contribution towards national development. We know the government can not employ everyone but can create enabling environment for citizens particularly young Gambians,” Darboe said. Enditem
