The world leader in digital security,Gemalto has expanded South Africa?s Vodacom m-pesa mobile wallet offering with the banking card dubbed prepaid EMV banking card.
With the deployment of the cards, Vodacom will be the first mobile operation to initiate the large ?scale rollout of EMV banking cards that will be accepted everywhere.
The card which is certified by the major international payment schemes and accepted by all EMV-compliant payment terminals and ATMs throughout South Africa is connected to m-pesa accounts and gives the freedom to make payments of goods and services without paying cash.
According to the managing director of m-commerce at vodacom, Herman Singh, with this initiative, the reach of South Africa?s leading operator services, Vodacom will be extended significantly since it makes it easy to purchase items anywhere with no need to carry cash.
He also stated that users can check current balances via the mobile wallet app and receive SMS alerts when funds are running low. Furthermore, because it is a PIN-protected virtual account, the user?s credit remains safe even if the card is lost or stolen.
The Senior Vice President for Africa at Gemalto, Thierry Mesnard said Gemalto?s off-the-shelf solution for Vodacom encompasses design and production of the card, as well as automatic packaging and point-of-sales delivery
The new project Mr. Mesnard noted highlights just how quickly the worlds of banking, retail and mobile communications are changing.
