A set piece in the 18th minute created the opportunity for the first goal by Shkodran Mustafi. But it seemed an eternity- in the second half of stoppage time -for Bastian Schweinsteiger’s winning goal to arrive, because Ukraine proved to be worthy opponents.
The Germans who paraded a lot of new faces were rather nervy and the suspense lasted to the last minute. Ukraine provided some hair-raising moments for the German fans. Particularly four minutes into the match, when Manuel Neuer fisted a shot from Yevhen Konoplyanka. And also when Jerome Boateng had to clear Konoplyanka’s 37th minute shot that beat Neuer from the goal-line.
On the other hand, the Die Mannschaft, regained their composure after recess and controlled the second half until they got the winning goal.
That the German’s made their Euro2016 bow with a comfortable 2-0 win shows that the ‘German Machine’ goes like a rocket.
