Germany claimed the bronze medal in women’s football at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a narrow 1-0 victory over Spain on Friday afternoon.
In a match marked by tight defences and few clear-cut chances, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, striking the woodwork just before the interval.
The decisive moment we arrived in the 65th minute when Germany’s Giulia Gwinn converted a penalty, awarded after a foul by Spain’s goalkeeper, Cata Coll. Spain was allowed to equalize dramatically, with a penalty awarded seven seconds before the final whistle.
However, Alexia Putellas’ effort was denied by a remarkable save from German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
Despite holding the majority of possession and creating several late opportunities, Spain could not score to force extra time.
This victory represents Germany’s fourth bronze medal in Olympic women’s football, following previous successes in 2000, 2004, and 2008. Competing in their first Olympic Games, Spain will reflect on missed chances.
The gold medal match, featuring Brazil against the United States, is set to take place on Saturday at Parc des Princes.
