Germany has mobilized a 15.3 million euro grant (about 16 million U.S. dollars) to support nature conservation and communities in Namibia affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, the grant will help in mitigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in the conservation and tourism sector.
A joint statement on Wednesday from the Namibian government and the German Embassy in Windhoek said 9 million euros shall be channeled through to the Community Conservation Fund of Namibia.
“The aim is to support communal conservancies and the local tourism sector with securing ongoing employment of game guards, local people working for the conservancies and conservancy tourism businesses,” the statement said, adding that 6.3 million euros are envisaged for measures aiding national parks and protected areas.
