A total of 3,059 people died in road accidents in Germany in 2019, a decline of 6.6 percent compared to the previous year, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Thursday.

The number of traffic accident fatalities in Germany was the “lowest since this statistic was first compiled more than 60 years ago,” Destatis noted.

The number of people injured in road accidents in Germany also declined by 3 percent to around 384,000 in 2019 compared with the previous year, according to the provisional figures from Destatis.

In total, German police recorded around 2.7 million accidents in 2019, an increase of 1.9 percent.

Accidents with material damage increased by 2.5 percent, while the number of accidents involving injured or killed people decreased by 2.8 percent, according to Destatis. Enditem
