Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has announced plans to implement Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League.
This decision addresses ongoing concerns about officiating inconsistencies within the league.
Okraku’s commitment to introducing VAR aligns with the global trend, as VAR has become a standard in many top-tier football competitions worldwide.
The GFA is exploring cost-effective VAR solutions tailored to the needs of developing nations, following recommendations from FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the 73rd FIFA Congress last year.
During a Meet the Press event in Sunyani, Okraku assured that VAR would be integrated into Ghanaian football as part of a comprehensive strategy to significantly enhance refereeing standards.
“We are going to introduce VAR into our football. Whatever we need to do to bring VAR into the league, we will,” Okraku stated.
VAR has been utilized in Ghana with promising results, including during the 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria at the Baba Yara Stadium and Dreams FC’s CAF Confederation Cup knockout matches last season.
The introduction of VAR is expected to significantly bolster the fairness and integrity of the Ghana Premier League, aligning it with global officiating standards and raising the bar for football in the country.
