Mr Mark Kofi Aprek, Tema Chairman for the GFD, said it was unfortunate that employers consider Persons Living With Disability (PLWD) as unemployable due to some unfounded perceptions about disability.
Mr Apreku said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday when the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) disbursed a total of GHC40,000 to 69 PLW Ds in Tema.
He noted that even though a number of disables have employable skills, employers including government refused to hire their services.
“Employers always discriminate against us because of our disability”, he observed.
He stated for instance that as a Higher National Diploma (HND) Accounting holder, he has been searching for a job since 2011adding that several letters and follow-ups to some ministries, government agencies and private companies have yielded no result.
Mr Apreku also urged political parties to put practical measures to create employment opportunities for PLWDs as part of their manifestos.
He explained that this would guide the winner of the 2016 elections and other future ones to provide an enabling environment for dignifying business opportunities for the disabled.
He further proposed a free tertiary education policy for the disabled as a way to encourage many PLWDs to pursue higher education.
