Mr Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has revealed that OrganisedOrganised Labour has adopted progressive measures to protect worker interests in state-owned organisations organisations.
As part of the measures, OrganisedOrganised Labour has constituted a ten-member Technical Committee to focus on Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) management and other significant national concerns.
The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for July 25, 2024, at the TUC Board Room. It is expected to submit its report by July 31, 2024.
Mr. Koomson described the action as laudable and called on workers to be proactive, serve as the first line of security, and provide detailed information through their respective local unions to the national leadership for action.
He also warned the leadership of local workers’ unions who are in bed with management to the detriment of the general worker’s interest must wake up or be booted out of office.
The GFL Secretary-General also urged the technical committee tasked with identifying all relevant issues related to SSNIT governance and pensions, in general, to undertake the task with all diligence.
The committee is also responsible for preparing a position paper based on their findings. This paper will guide Organised Labour’s leadership in discussions with SSNIT, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), and other relevant state institutions.
Mr Koomson described this move as the best way to protect state assets during interaction with the media in Tema, monitored by the Communication for Development and Advocacy (CDA Consult), a development communication advocacy non-governmental organisation based in Tema, Ghana, has revealed.
Mr. Koomson noted that the ten-member Organised Labour Technical Committee represents the way forward.
OrganisedOrganised Labour announced the suspension of its strike, which took effect on Monday, July 15, against SSNIT’s moves to sell 60 percent of its shares in four hotels to a private firm owned by Ghana’s Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong.
The committee members are Bernard Adjei, Franklin Owusu Ansah, Salamatu Braima, and Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, representatives of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Others are Samuel Akologo, Lucy Addy, Andulai Yakubu, and King Ali Awudu, nominated by The Forum (which includes the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition for Concerned Teachers (CCT)).
The rest are Eric Tetteh (industry) and George Taylor (Judicial Service Staff Union), nominated by the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL).
