The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have categorically and unequivocally denied the allegations suggesting that they intend to take control of the country if the 2024 elections are marred by violence.
These claims, attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), were addressed in a press release on Friday, August 23, 2024.
In their statement, GAF clarified that they have never held a press conference or publicly declared about staging a coup.
The statement reiterated that GAF’s role is strictly to support the Ghana Police Service when requested, and such support does not imply a desire to overthrow the government.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, reiterated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup. We are committed to preventing and resisting any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”
The release further urged civil society groups and the media to avoid using GAF’s name to escalate political tensions.
GAF called on all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the upcoming December 2024 elections, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and allowing citizens to freely and safely engage in lawful activities.
