Ghana’s Parliament on Monday began registering newly elected members.

The registration of the 275 MPs kick-started the process to elect a new Speaker of Parliament and other officials for the new parliament ahead of the inauguration of the president-elect Nana Akufo-Addo in January, 2017.

The president-elect is expected to nominate two persons for the position of Speaker and First Deputy Speaker, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority will select their choice for the Second Deputy Speaker’s position.

With the results from 275 constituencies provisionally declared, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won 170 of them to ruling NDC’s 105 seats. Prior to the elections, the NDC controlled the legislature with 148 out of the 275 seats.

Main opposition leader Akufo-Addo was declared winner of the presidential elections by the Electoral Commission. He polled 53.85 percent of the total valid votes cast as against his main rival and incumbent president John Dramani Mahama who obtained 44.40 percent. Enditem
