The Ghana CSO Platform on SDGs has expressed grave concern over the widespread of illegal and irresponsible mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” and their devastating impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a press conference in Accra, on 8th October,2024, Mrs. Beauty Emefa Narteh, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Anti-Corruption and Co-Chair of the CSO SDGs Platform, emphasized the urgent need for action. She highlighted the far-reaching consequences of galamsey, affecting all SDG goals and threatening the livelihoods of rural communities, public health, food security, and the sustainability of natural resources.

The platform is calling for immediate action from President Nana Akufo-Addo, requesting the revocation of LI2426 and the withdrawal of all licenses granted for reconnaissance, prospecting, exploration, and mining in forests and protected reserves.

They also demand the enforcement of illegal mining laws, prevention of mining in water bodies and forest reserves, and the implementation of the buffer zone policy.

The Ghana CSO Platform stands in solidarity with organized labor and urges all members and affiliates to support the strike action. They emphasize the critical need for unity among Ghanaians to push the government to fulfill its duty to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.

Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, speaking on behalf of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, emphasized that the crisis is worse than the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged the President to invoke Article 31 and declare a state of emergency to address the situation swiftly. The coalition, comprising labor unions, media, and other stakeholders, demands immediate action from the government. They stress that the proposals presented so far are inadequate and that concrete steps must be taken to save the country from the brink of extinction.
