The Ghana Drunkards Association has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Hon. Atta Akyea, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, against former President John Dramani Mahama.

In a statement issued by Moses Drybone, the President of the Association, they labeled the attack as “unprovoked” and defended Mahama’s membership in their organization.

The controversy arose after Hon. Atta Akyea questioned the suitability of Mahama, a senior member of the Ghana Drunkards Association, for leadership, implying that his association with the group disqualified him from holding the highest office in the land.

In response, the Association asserted that Mahama’s membership in their esteemed group does not hinder his ability to serve as President of Ghana.

“While former President Mahama’s membership of our esteemed Association is not in doubt, we do not agree that such membership disqualified him from becoming the President of Ghana,” the statement read.

The Ghana Drunkards Association, known for its outspoken nature and diverse membership across political lines, emphasized that they would defend any member whose integrity is under attack, regardless of political affiliation.

They called on all political parties to focus on issues that affect the daily lives of Ghanaians, particularly the rising cost of alcohol, which they identified as a pressing concern.

The statement concluded with a reminder that political discourse should remain focused on substantive issues that impact the well-being of citizens, rather than personal attacks on individuals.

The Ghana Drunkards Association, though often perceived with a degree of humor, has consistently voiced its concerns on national matters, particularly those affecting its members.

This latest defense of Mahama highlights the Association’s commitment to standing by its members in the face of public scrutiny.
