The Ghana Education Service (GES) has initiated an administrative inquiry into the stabbing death of Edward Sackey, a final-year student at O’Reilly Senior High School.
The incident occurred on Monday, September 2, and has prompted the GES to conduct an internal investigation and the Ghana Police Service to conduct a criminal probe.
In a statement released on Wednesday, September 4, the GES extended its condolences to Sackey’s family and confirmed that it aims to complete its internal review within two weeks.
Eric Nkansah, the Director General of the GES, has personally visited the school and Sackey’s family to offer support.
“The Ghana Education Service is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Master Edward Sackey at O’Reilly Senior High School,” the statement said.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends, and school community. We are committed to concluding our administrative investigations within two weeks while the Police Service conducts its criminal inquiry.”
The GES assured the public that order has been restored at O’Reilly SHS and emphasized that measures are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
“We are pleased to report that calm has been restored on campus, and we are taking steps to protect the well-being of all students and staff,” the statement added.
The GES also urged the public to avoid speculating about the circumstances of Sackey’s death, emphasizing the importance of allowing the investigative processes to proceed without interference.
“We call on the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigations to take their course. We will provide updates as necessary,” the GES concluded.
