Ghana Establishes Partnership With U.S for Power Sector

Dr Kwabena Donkor Minister of Power

With proven economic growth rates and a growing market for private investments, Ghana is emerging as a highly attractive partner for American investors to consider. Its status as a member the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) combined with its huge potential to develop natural resources will facilitate the birth of international partnerships within the power sector, driving economic development and encouraging job creation.

EnergyNet’s conference Powering Africa: Ghana in Accra this September highlighted Hon. Donkor’s commitment to finding solutions to Ghana’s power supply challenges, encouraging private investment to support generation, transmission and distribution assets in the power sector.

The annual Powering Africa: Summit investment conference will take place from 27-29th January 2016 at the Mariott Marquis, Washington, D.C. This meeting will bring together African ministers of finance and energy and US government agencies behind the ‘Power Africa’ initiative to meet with private sector investors and power developers from across North America and Africa. The first meeting, held in January 2015, saw 17 African countries represented with 57% of attendees originating from North America.

With American investors keen to find out more about projects happening in Ghana and opportunities to work with Government and local companies, the Summit provides the chance to network with industry leaders and make crucial business contacts.

Programme Manager of the Powering Africa: Summit Ms Veronica Bolton-Smith commented, “PA:S is a valuable platform as it enables dialogue between key stakeholders and developers.”

PAS will explore the power & infrastructure projects currently piquing the interest of investors, including the Tema Port development in Ghana. Industry and agriculture will also feature on the 2016 agenda, examining the role transmission plays in the success of these industries.
