Ghana has begun issuing chip-embedded biometric passports as of April 28, 2025, marking a significant step in its digital transformation and security modernization efforts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the rollout aligns with global aviation standards, aiming to streamline services for citizens domestically and abroad while bolstering document integrity against forgery.

Existing biometric passports will remain valid until 2030, allowing current holders to travel without immediate replacement. The new passports feature embedded microchips storing biometric data and photographs, a upgrade designed to curb fraud and elevate Ghana’s standing in international security compliance.

Applications for the digital passports are now accessible online via the Ministry’s portal, with processing timelines set at 15 days for standard issuance and five days for expedited requests. Round-the-clock operations at Passport Offices, free home delivery through Ghana Post, and real-time application tracking aim to enhance user convenience. To encourage adoption, the Cabinet has proposed reducing passport fees from GH₵500 to GH₵350, pending parliamentary approval.

Users are advised to handle the chip-equipped documents carefully, avoiding exposure to heat, moisture, or physical bending. The passports are also available through Ghanaian embassies globally, ensuring accessibility for citizens overseas.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized the initiative’s roots in a public-private partnership model, stating it aims to “eliminate corruption, phase out unauthorized agents, and restore public trust” while generating employment opportunities. The overhaul is expected to benefit sectors ranging from aviation and logistics to digital identity management, with airlines and immigration services poised to leverage faster, more secure verification processes.

The rollout reflects Ghana’s broader push to integrate technology into public services, mirroring global trends toward digitized security solutions. As nations increasingly adopt chip-based travel documents, Ghana’s proactive measures signal its commitment to balancing innovation with equitable access, ensuring citizens and businesses alike navigate a safer, more efficient future.
