Ghana joins global celebration of World Standards Day

Ghana on Monday, Octobe 14 joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 2024 World Standards Day with “Standards for shared vision.

The cooperation of many public and private partners and the use of all available tools, including international standards and conformity assessment are some of the requirements for attaining the sustainable development goals (SDGs) aimed at addressing social imbalances, develop a sustainable economy, and slow the rate of climate change.

In a statement to mark the occasion, Prof Alex Doodoo Director General, of Ghana Standards Board, said without standard the sustainable development goals SDG will not be met and added that Ghana Standard Board is a solution provider and custodian of Ghana standard activities.

Prof Dodoo warned that as a country we must protect our environment and natural response as other players from abroad who want to exploit our mineral resource like lithium and sell to us as batteries

According to him, the theme of the 2024 celebrations tagged ” shared vision for a better world standard for the changing climate” .is a call on the right direction and called on Ghana ins to be part of the shared vision.

He called on stakeholders around the country to join the three international standardisation bodies International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunications Union as an affiliate on a mission that affirms the importance of the seventeen SDGs to build back better, stressing that standards are more relevant than ever in this pursuit.

The director further added that the entire standards system is built on collaboration which is a testament to the power of cooperation and the belief that we are stronger than the sum of our parts. “We need to be part of the shared vision”. he stated.

Delivering world standard Day message Director of Standard Directorate Mrs Regina Vowotor said this years team is focus on goal Sustainable Development goal 13 Is in this spirit that the IEC, ISO and ITU are engaging in a multi-year World Standards Day journey that showcases the many ways in which international standards contribute to the success of the SDGs.

Commenting on the celebrations in Ghana at the ceremony was Engineer, Steve Poku Kwateng who is acting deputy director of operations Ghana Standard Board stated that his outfit has been in the forefront of domesticating international Standards for use in the country by working with relevant stakeholders to adopt them as National Standards, as well as providing training and certification services for organisations and individuals in the last years. This according to him helps to address the attainment of the objectives of the seventeen SDGs in Ghana.

He enjoined all Ghanaians to support the Ghana standard board in the propagation and implementation of Standards for the benefit of the Nation and its people through participation in standardisation activities, provision of information on suspected substandard products and demand for quality at all times in purchase decisions. Over 30 exhibitors were seen and present displaying their products.
