The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will open a Book of Condolence on Monday, August 26, 2024, in tribute to Godwin Avenorgbo, the Chairman of its 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, who passed away unexpectedly last Monday.
The Book of Condolence will be available for public signing at the Ghana International Press Centre on Gamel Abdul-Nasser Avenue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for the next ten days.
The announcement was made in a press release dated August 21, signed by General Secretary Mr. Kofi Yeboah.
The release detailed that Avenorgbo, affectionately known as “The Grandmaster,” was rushed to the hospital following a sudden illness but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His death has profoundly shocked the GJA and the broader media community in Ghana, prompting an outpouring of tributes.
The GJA’s National Executive, led by Vice President Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, visited Avenorgbo’s family at Regimanuel Estates near Accra on Tuesday to offer their condolences and discuss arrangements for a fitting tribute.
The GJA expressed its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and offered prayers for strength during this difficult time.
Discussions also included planning for a respectful and dignified burial for Avenorgbo, who had served as the Director of Radio at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
Avenorgbo was instrumental in planning and executing activities for the GJA’s Diamond Jubilee, demonstrating dedication and enthusiasm.
He had recently participated actively in the GJA’s anniversary celebrations, giving a heartfelt speech and dancing energetically at a commemorative lecture at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
In addition to his role as Chairman of the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Avenorgbo contributed to the GJA in various capacities over several decades.
His sudden passing represents a significant loss to both the association and the nation, leaving many still grappling with the reality of his death.
