Ghana’s Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has hailed the introduction of the Skills and Knowledge Bank portal as a significant advancement in the country’s digitization efforts.

Launched on September 17, 2024, collaborating with the Ministry of Communication, Ghana became the second African nation to establish such a platform.

The portal is designed to provide school-aged youth and researchers with vital academic resources, a previously lacking service. Dr. Adutwum expressed enthusiasm for the initiative during the launch event, stating, “The future is here today. The transformation in our education sector will help us transform our fortunes.”

He emphasized that digitization should be viewed not as an end but as a means to enhance learning outcomes. “We aim for students to acquire 21st-century skills that will enable them to contribute to building a more robust nation,” he explained. The minister underscored that the portal is intended to drive comprehensive transformation across the education system.

Additionally, Dr Adutwum announced plans for Ghana’s first virtual Senior High School, which aims to enrol 10,000 students in the upcoming academic year. He noted that efforts are underway to create virtual laboratories in collaboration with the Open University in the United Kingdom.

The Skills and Knowledge Bank portal was developed by Mpuntu Technologies, a Ghanaian-owned company, with support from telecommunications giant MTN and funding from the World Bank.
