Alhassan Suhuyini, Member of Parliament for Tamale North and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Lands Committee, has pledged staunch opposition against the reclassification of Achimota Forest.
He declared that the Minority caucus will leverage all available means to prevent its development.
In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Suhuyini expressed grave concerns over the potential risks of declassifying nearly half of Achimota Forest.
He emphasized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s lack of clarity on the rationale behind the decision. He highlighted the contradiction of significant government spending on afforestation efforts, totalling GH¢421 million, juxtaposed against plans for commercial and residential projects in the forest.
“The government’s investment in afforestation, including Green Ghana Day, aims to enhance our forest cover, yet reclassifying Achimota Forest contradicts these efforts,” Suhuyini stated, questioning the sustainability of converting 361 acres of natural land into urban development.
He further underscored the ecological importance of Achimota Forest in filtering Accra’s air, especially amidst urban congestion, advocating for on-site verification by his committee to scrutinize reported demarcations for potential development.
“We are committed to saving Achimota Forest by all means necessary,” Suhuyini affirmed, emphasizing the forest’s crucial role in safeguarding public health and the environment.
