Ghanaian para athletes Zinabu Issah and Gilbert Ampiah returned home with three medals following standout performances at the 2025 Marrakech Grand Prix in Morocco.

Their achievements highlight Ghana’s growing prominence in international para sports.

Zinabu Issah claimed gold in the women’s F57 discus throw with a record-breaking throw of 29.25 meters, solidifying her position as a contender for the 2025 World Championships and 2026 Commonwealth Games. She added a silver medal in the shot put with a distance of 8.54 meters, narrowly missing gold to a Nigerian competitor. Issah now eyes upcoming competitions, including the 2025 Grand Prix in Paris and the All Women WPA Grand Prix in the Czech Republic, aiming to further her international exposure.

Sixteen-year-old Gilbert Ampiah, a student at St. Augustine’s College, earned bronze in the high jump T44 category with a leap of 1.73 meters. The medal marks his first international podium finish, underscoring his rapid rise in para athletics. Ampiah’s performance at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting reflects rigorous training and dedication, positioning him as a future prospect for Ghana.

The athletes’ success underscores the importance of sustained investment in para sports infrastructure and training programs. Ghana’s Paralympic Committee has increasingly focused on nurturing young talent, with these medals signaling progress toward broader recognition in global competitions. Challenges such as funding and access to specialized coaching remain, but achievements like Issah’s and Ampiah’s demonstrate the potential for greater success with enhanced support.

As Ghana celebrates these milestones, attention turns to the athletes’ next goals. Issah’s trajectory toward major tournaments and Ampiah’s debut medal hint at a promising era for Ghanaian para athletics, inspiring both grassroots participation and institutional confidence. Their accomplishments not only elevate national pride but also reinforce the need for inclusive policies to empower athletes with disabilities across the continent.
