George Gyasi Gyamfi, the head coach of Ghana’s Paralympic team, passed away in Oslo on May 17, 2024. This occurred following the team’s failure to participate in the Fjordkraft Bergren Marathon.
Gyamfi collapsed on April 28, 2024, and was admitted to the Oslo University Hospital, where he later succumbed to undisclosed causes. The team, consisting of 11 members, arrived in Oslo on April 25 but did not attend the marathon, leading to a search operation.
During the search, one team member, Nana Antwi, was apprehended while trying to cross into Sweden by train. The whereabouts of the remaining nine team members remain unknown.
A letter dated July 3 from Ghana’s Ministry of National Security, addressed to the Ministries of Youth, Sports, and Foreign Affairs, states that efforts are underway with the European Border Control Coast Guard Agency and the Norwegian Embassy in Accra to locate the missing athletes.
The incident has raised concerns and condolences from the sports community, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the circumstances surrounding the team’s absence and Coach Gyamfi’s tragic death.
