The Ghanaian government has pledged to provide affordable hand hygiene facilities to all citizens to enhance public health and well-being.

Sanitation and Water Resources Minister Lydia Seyram Alhassan announced this initiative Tuesday as part of the country’s comprehensive hand hygiene strategy, introduced in 2023 during the national commemoration of Global Handwashing Day in Accra, the country’s capital.

“This comprehensive strategy aims to provide accessible, affordable, and sustainable hand hygiene facilities for all by 2030, in both regular and emergency situations, while minimizing environmental impact,” Alhassan said.

She called on stakeholders across the health, education, hospitality, and water, sanitation, and hygiene sectors to adopt and implement the strategy to help the country achieve its goals.

“Together we can create an environment in our homes, schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces, and public spaces where hand hygiene is prioritized,” the minister said.

Theodora Adomako-Adjei, the national coordinator of the handwashing campaign, emphasized the need for Ghanaians to cultivate a culture of hand hygiene to protect themselves from unnecessary infections.

“Coordinated and collective action is critical to the advancement of hand hygiene access and practice,” she added.
