Ghana’s 2025 Millennium Marathon, scheduled for September 6 in Accra, will kick off with an official launch ceremony on Tuesday, April 22, at the Accra Sports Stadium’s Press Center.

The event, expected to draw government officials, international athletes, and nonprofit organizations, aims to expand its global footprint while emphasizing health, tourism, and community impact through sports.

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreations will attend the launch as Special Guest of Honor, joined by sponsors, international partners, and stakeholders from health and sports sectors. The marathon, now a fixture in West Africa’s athletic calendar, seeks to attract elite runners and charity participants alike, bolstering its reputation as a platform for both competitive racing and social advocacy.

Ernest Buamah, General Manager of the Millennium Marathon, underscored the role of media in amplifying the event’s goals. “Media coverage is instrumental in promoting our mission of health, fitness, and social impact,” he said, noting this year’s focus on fostering tourism and international collaboration. The launch will unveil the marathon’s theme and logo, announce key partnerships, and outline preparatory programs ahead of the September race.

Organizers highlighted ambitions to increase foreign participation, particularly from NGOs using the marathon to fundraise for causes aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 2025 edition follows a post-pandemic resurgence in large-scale sporting events, with Ghana positioning itself as a hub for athletics and tourism in the region.

As Accra prepares to host the marathon, the event reflects broader efforts to leverage sports as a driver of economic and social development. Previous editions have drawn thousands of participants, blending competitive racing with cultural exchanges. This year’s iteration is poised to further cement Ghana’s role in Africa’s growing marathon circuit, offering a stage for athletes to showcase talent while advancing grassroots health initiatives.

With international interest in African sporting events rising, the Millennium Marathon aligns with regional strategies to harness tourism and athletics for global engagement. The event also underscores Accra’s capacity to host world-class competitions, reinforcing infrastructure investments and partnerships critical to sustaining Ghana’s sports tourism ambitions.
