It will assemble around 100 high-level delegates from over 20 African countries and create a platform for delegates to define and discuss critical regional specific issues and identify innovative practices that can help in meeting the challenges to youth financial inclusion, entrepreneurship and economic citizenship education.

Launching the conference on Tuesday, Joseph Chognuru, the Financial Services Director at the Finance Ministry of Ghana, said empowering the youth is crucial in the country’s transformation agenda as they constitute not only a formidable demographic force but also provides the potential for moving the development process to the next level.

He said the ability of the youth to play their roles efficiently and effectively will have far-reaching implications for their own lives, and the society at large.

“We need to follow the example of Mark Zukerberg of Facebook fame who started his business earlier than the age of 18 years,” he said, while stressing the need for constant review of youth policies and re-assessment of priorities to ensure the promotion of youth involvement at all stages of development process.

Helga Boadi, chief executive officer of the Youth Enterprise Support (YES), the state institution established specially to promote and support young entrepreneurs, called on African States to rekindle youth financial literacy and especially the spirit of saving at all key levels.

“Our experience over the past year at YES indicates that young persons who are financially aware and active are able to positively impact and reshape their destiny,” she said.

Other activities lined up for the meeting include financial literacy training as well as plenary sessions and workshops on topics around the three thematic areas: financial inclusion, entrepreneurship and economic citizenship education. Enditem
