Mawuena 1The Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) is making strides in research towards creating alternative commercial export opportunities in the areas of traditional and non – traditional cash crops.

Ghana depends heavily on cocoa which has been the main agro – export commodity supporting the economy over the years and GIPC believes it’s time to diversify and consider other options as well.

Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O.) of GIPC, Mrs. Mawuena Trebarh articulates in an interview with Reuters’ Daniel Bases that the council has a strategic focus on expanding the export portfolio of the country.

?There is a lot on the side of perishable fruits and vegetables, we are looking at developing a couple of non – traditional grains particularly wheat and all other options available particularly in the Northern sector of the country. Millet is another big staple in our Sub – Region, ?She added.

Mrs. Trebarh noted that GIPC is conducting more research on the commercial opportunities of these crops and has already received ?lots of proposals from Asia, North America, Middle East and Europe” which are under review by the council.
