On June 29th, 2024, aspiring and professional actors were gathered at the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Legon, for a masterclass hosted by the Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF).
The session, titled “What Casting Directors Look Out For,” featured Mr Mawuko Kuadzi, CEO of MK Casting and a renowned international casting director.
Mr. Kuadzi, also the Rector of MK Acting College, brought decades of industry expertise to the event, emphasizing the pivotal role casting plays in filmmaking. Participants gained valuable insights into the nuanced process of casting, learning that directors meticulously seek actors who can authentically embody characters and elevate narratives.
The masterclass addressed crucial aspects of auditioning, from initial screenings to final callbacks. Mr Kuadzi imparted practical strategies for actors to enhance their auditions, including tips on crafting compelling portfolios and establishing a solid industry presence.
Madam Philippa Ama Bentuma Authur, Director of the BSIFF, expressed enthusiasm for Mr. Kuadzi’s proposal to produce short films featuring masterclass participants. This initiative not only showcases the talent of the participants but also highlights the festival’s unwavering commitment to nurturing local talent, making the audience feel supported and encouraged.
Participants, including veteran actress Naya Prat and newcomer Madam Essilfua Boris-Hemans, lauded the masterclass for its educational value and practical applicability. Reflecting on the event, Naya Prat noted, “The information we learned is necessary for all actors, regardless of experience. It’s invaluable for future auditions and career growth.” Madam Boris-Hemans echoed similar sentiments, expressing excitement about applying newfound knowledge to her acting endeavours.
Mr Kuadzi reaffirmed MK Acting College’s dedication to developing Ghanaian talent, underscoring the importance of ongoing education in the arts. He emphasized, “Our goal is to empower actors to succeed in an increasingly competitive industry.”
The BSIFF Actors Masterclass concluded as a triumph, equipping Ghanaian actors with essential industry knowledge and practical tools to navigate their careers with confidence. This success is a testament to the potential and talent of the Ghanaian film industry, leaving the audience feeling proud and inspired.
