Ghanaian super bantamweight boxer John Zile has called for a rematch against South Africa’s Siyabulela Hem following a contentious split-decision loss in their 10-round bout on May 10.
Judges scored the fight 97-93, 96-94, and 96-94 in favor of Hem, a verdict Zile disputes despite acknowledging the outcome “in good faith.”
The clash, held in Hem’s hometown, marked Zile’s second international fight and first since a 2022 defeat in Tanzania. Known locally as “The Monster,” Zile defied expectations by lasting the full distance against the favored Hem, whose tactical clinching drew criticism from observers. “I was tested but proved my resilience,” Zile said post-fight. “I won that match, but this is boxing. I’ll knock him out if we meet again on neutral ground—not in Accra, not here.”
Currently ranked fourth in Ghana’s super bantamweight division, Zile argued the bout elevated his profile internationally. “This fight exposed me as a global contender. I’m ready for any top-tier boxer, anywhere,” he added, expressing gratitude to promoter Osibor for facilitating the opportunity while urging larger promotions to consider his skills.
Zile’s trainer, Samuel Nii Armah of Accra’s Bronx Boxing Club, attributed the narrow loss to truncated preparation. “With a month’s notice, our approach would’ve been sharper,” he said, praising Zile’s composure under pressure. “Bronx produces champions. We’ve learned from this and will return stronger.”
The Ghana Boxing Authority has yet to comment on Zile’s rematch appeal. However, analysts note the 26-year-old’s performance against Hem a regional titleholder signals growing competitiveness in Africa’s crowded 122-pound division. Zile’s demand for neutral venues reflects broader concerns among rising African boxers about hometown judging biases, a recurring issue in regional matchups.
For Zile, the focus now shifts to securing high-profile bouts that could propel him toward continental rankings. With Ghana’s boxing scene seeking new stars following Richard Commey’s recent setbacks, Zile’s blend of durability and ambition positions him as a figure to watch provided promoters and schedulers answer his call.
