Mustapha Ussif, Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, addressed concerns regarding outstanding hotel payments following the 13th All African Games held in Accra.
The Ghana Hoteliers Association had threatened legal action against the Ministry and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) over unpaid bills.
Speaking at a press conference, Ussif clarified that 16 of the 44 hotels engaged during the event have had payments settled in full, while the remaining 28 are partially paid.
“We engaged 44 hotels during the African Games, and as we speak, only 28 of them are being owed by the ministry; the rest have all been paid in full 100%,” Ussif stated. He reassured that efforts are underway to secure funds to settle the outstanding amounts.
He further explained, “We have paid the remaining 28 hotels more than 40%, and when we receive the funding, they will be paid. When you have a budget, it doesn’t mean that you have money. As and when we receive money, the rest will be catered for.”
The Minister emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to honouring its financial obligations to all stakeholders in hosting the games and highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve the situation promptly.
The reassurances from Ussif aim to address concerns raised by the Ghana Hoteliers Association and uphold transparency in financial dealings related to major sporting events hosted by Ghana.
