Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, has been elected President of the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) after securing 9,455 votes in the elections held on September 19.
Guru’s candidacy was marked by controversy, particularly following his initial disqualification from the presidential race.
During the vetting process, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, were disqualified because they were non-residents of any university hall.
In response, Guru’s legal team filed a petition with the SRC Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking a review of the disqualification.
They also submitted an interim injunction to the judicial board, requesting a temporary halt to the electoral process until the matter could be properly adjudicated.
On September 15, 2024, the appeals board ruled in favour of Guru, overturning the disqualification with a unanimous 7-0 vote.
The board instructed that Guru and Yeboah be reinstated as presidential candidates, leading to their successful campaign.
Guru’s election marks a significant moment in the intersection of music and student leadership at the University of Ghana, as he will represent and advocate for the interests of the student body.
